Antique Italian print engraving of Naples pier Molo di Pozzuoli

£75.00

Beautiful original Italian print showing a view of the Molo di Pozzuolo in Naples Italy. The description says: Molo di Pozzuolo, e Ponte detto di Caligola which translates in English as Pozzuolo Pier, and Caligola Bridge. Pozzuolo is better known as the world renowned picturesque city of Pozzuoli in the Phlegrean Peninsula.

The story goes that crazed Roman Emperor Caligula ordered a bridge be built to span a straight line from Baia pier to the Pozzuoli pier. The bridge was 3600 steps long which is roughly 2.6 km and was made from wooden boats anchored in double rows which were then covered with earth in likeness of the famous Via Appia in Rome. Once the bridge of boats was completed Caligula wearing his oak leaves crown rode atop a horse which was adorned in highly decorative phaleras and galloped back and forth for 2 days.
It’s possible that this engraving is by historian and artist Paolo Antonio Paoli best known for drawing ancient architectural scenes.

Presented in a cream mounting and a lovely artisan silver gold and maroon wooden frame with glass. Behind the frame there is Certificato di garanzia (garantee certificate) Stampa originale antica d’epoca dell’anno 1800 (original antique print from 1800).
